Unite in the Fight funds Transplant Day Celebration for Patients

When you think of cancer treatment, your mind might jump to chemotherapy or radiation, but what about bone marrow transplant (BMT)? A BMT may be needed by a cancer patient when the doses of chemotherapy or radiation are so high that they will cause permanent damage to the stem cells in the patient’s bone marrow. It can be used to regenerate a new immune system, restore the bone marrow’s normal function, and replace diseased, nonfunctioning bone marrow with healthy functioning bone marrow.

“The transplant process is a challenging journey, often requiring numerous procedures and treatments before reaching the pivotal moment of transplant,” said Gita Giddens, the blood and marrow transplant coordinator here at the Georgia Cancer Center.

Giddens, along with Brittany Raborn and April Latislaw, wanted to do something special for their patients during this difficult time. They created their program ‘Transplant Day Celebration’ and submitted it to Unite in the Fight Against Cancer for funding.

Unite is an annual community celebration honoring all who have been affected by this disease while raising funds for patient-centered programs. Unite 2024 funded thirteen programs, including this program, to improve the lives of our patients and staff.

Transplant Day Celebration’ will make the day special by creating an uplifting atmosphere in the transplant environment. Decorations, such as balloons and inspirational messages, will be added to the space, along with feathered boas, funny hats, and other fun party items to make it a true celebration.

“By making this day feel special, we aim to reinforce the support of the Bone Marrow Transplant team and strengthen the bond between patients and their donors.”

Unite in the Fight Against Cancer will be held on May 3, 2025. You can find more information by visiting our website and Facebook event page.
