Cancer patients are often challenged in their physical, emotional, and mental health following treatments. Feelings of fatigue, nausea, and overwhelming emotions are common, and can be overwhelming and isolating.
“We often find ourselves wishing we could do something a little extra for a patient or survivor,” said Gita Giddens, a transplant coordinator at the Georgia Cancer Center.
Unfortunately, resources are limited, restricting what staff members can do to share a bright moment with their patients in especially difficult moments. After speaking with nurses at the GCC and WellStar MCG Health, Angela Maskey, the Guest Relations Coordinator at the GCC, had an idea. Thus, the program ‘Patient Survivor Bright Moments’ was born.
“This initiative is a way to provide the means for nurses and outreach team members to be a momentary bright spot for patients or survivors during interaction in the clinical setting or at community events,” said Maskey about the program. “Often small gestures and being heard can have a significant impact, so that those who struggle feel less alone.”
The program is funded by Unite in the Fight Against Cancer, which is an annual community celebration honoring all who have been affected by this disease, while raising funds for patient-centered programs.
The Bright Moment kits will include items like trail mix, sugar free candies, lip balm, support group information and encouraging messages. Designated team members at multiple locations will be able to distribute these kits at their discretion.
“There will be close to 1,000 kits distributed throughout the coming year, along with the opportunity to have a conversation with patients and survivors regarding other ways we can work to support their emotional needs,” said Maskey.
